Canadian GHG Emission by Province
Historically, Alberta has had the largest emissions of all Canadian provinces primarily due to its oil and gas sector.
Ontario’s, the 2nd largest emitting province, have seen emissions drop from 2005 through 2020 mainly due to the closure of its fleet of coal-fired generation plants.
2021 Provincial Share of GHG Emissions
In 2021, Alberta accounted for almost 40% of the total Canadian GHG emissions while Ontario represented just over 20% and Quebec over 10%.
Combined, these 3 provinces accounted for almost three-quarters of Canada’s total GHG emissions.
