In 2006, China surpassed the US to become the worlds largest emitter of GHGs and has since more than doubled the US in overall share accounting for almost 25% of the global total in 2022. China’s total share has decreased from earlier peaks thanks to efforts to expand renewable energy.

The share of US GHG emissions began to decrease after 2000 dropping from over 205 of the global total to just over 10% in 2022.

India is the only other major country, besides China,  who has seen their market share of global GHG emissions increasing from about 3% in 1990 to over 6% in 2022.

Although Russia’s share of GHG emissions decreased from 1990 (almost 10%), they have basically leveled off since 2000 at about 4%.

Canada’s share of global GHG emissions dropped to 1.5% in 2022, down from 1.9% in 1990.
