Global electric car sales have increased rapidly over the past decade, rising from 0.3 million vehicles in 2014 to approximately 17.3 million in 2024. Growth accelerates markedly after 2020, when annual EV sales increase from 3.0 million in 2020 to 17.3 million in 2024, reflecting falling battery costs, expanding model availability, and tighter emissions regulations.
By contrast, non-electric car sales show a declining and more volatile trend. Volumes fall from around 75–80 million vehicles per year in 2014–2018 to 64.5 million in 2020, driven by the pandemic and broader structural shifts. Despite a partial recovery to about 62.0 million vehicles in 2024, sales remain below pre-2020 levels and continue to gradually increase toward ~69.9 million by 2030.
As a result, the EV share of global light-duty vehicle sales rises from below 0.5% in 2014 to roughly 28% in 2024, and is projected to increase further to around 41% by 2030, as electric car sales grow to nearly 25 million vehicles per year.
