Global LNG trade reached a new record of over 411 mtpa (~55 Bcf/d) in 2024. In total, there are now 48 (chart shows the largest importers) countries importing LNG worldwide. The top 7 countries accounted for almost 66% of total LNG import volumes in 2024. The Russia/Ukraine conflict and global energy crisis changed LNG import patterns from 2022 to 2024:

  • China is the largest market for LNG cargoes in 2024 after importing 78.6 mtpa, up 110% from 2023.
  • Japan’s imports grew from 66.1 mtpa in 2023 to 67.7 mtpa in 2024 ranking them 2nd .
  • South Korea imported over 47- mtpa for 3rd place.
  • India climbed into 4th place, with 26.2 mtpa imported in 2024 versus 22 mtpa in 2023.
  • Taiwan imported 21.8 mtpa in 2024 versus 20.2- in 2023 and moved into 5th place.
  • France imports dropped from 21.8 mtpa in 2023 to 18 mtpa in 2024 to rank 6th .
  • Netherlands imports dropped from 16.3 mtpa in 2023 to 13.3 mtpa in 2024 and ranked 7th .
