Global electric truck sales remain at an early stage but show clear acceleration after 2019, with adoption patterns differing markedly by region and technology.

Key Trends:
  • China dominates early deployment, particularly in BEV trucks. Annual BEV sales rise from negligible levels in 2014 to 71,000 units in 2017, then fluctuate before rebounding to 76,000 units in 2024, reflecting cycles in subsidy support and fleet procurement. PHEV truck sales in China remain minimal, generally below a few hundred units per year, indicating a strong preference for full electrification in commercial freight.
  • Europe shows steady and increasingly rapid growth. BEV truck sales rise from just 46 units in 2014 to approximately 12,000 units in 2024, with a sharp acceleration after 2021. PHEV trucks remain marginal in Europe, consistently below 50 units per year, underscoring regulatory and fleet preferences for zero-emission solutions.
  • The rest of the world begins to scale from a very low base. BEV truck sales increase from near zero before 2018 to around 2,000 units in 2024, while PHEV adoption remains negligible, suggesting that electrification outside China and Europe is still in an early pilot phase.

Overall, the data indicate that electric truck electrification is overwhelmingly BEV-led, with China driving early volumes and Europe emerging as the fastest-growing market in recent years. PHEVs play only a limited role, highlighting the importance of charging infrastructure, depot-based operations, and policy support in enabling heavy-duty vehicle electrification.
