In 1971 Tilbury began operations as British Columbia’s first LNG facility, initially serving peak winter demand through storage and peak-shaving supply. In 2019 (Phase 1A): Expansion commissioned, adding a 46,000 m³ storage tank and around 0.25 mtpa liquefaction capacity, enabling marine fuel use and first exports to China. In 2022 design of Phase 1B underway targeting an additional 0.65 mtpa liquefaction to meet increased marine-fuel demand; Phase 2 planning also underway (larger tank and >2.5 mtpa). In 2025 permitting continues for phased expansions. Construction planning is moving forward, with Phase 1B target start around 2026, and bunkering operations potentially beginning by 2027.
