Newfoundland LNG (Grassy Point, Placentia Bay) – First proposed in the mid-2000s by a consortium (North Atlantic Pipeline Partners, later Newfoundland LNG Ltd.) to build an import terminal, later converted to an export concept. It was envisioned as a large-scale terminal (up to 9 mtpa) using gas from offshore Newfoundland fields. The project never reached FID and stalled after 2012 due to lack of upstream gas commitments.
In 2022–2023, new interest appeared around using offshore gas (e.g., from Bay du Nord and other fields) for LNG exports. However, Equinor and partners focused instead on oil development, leaving LNG as a long-term option without active investment. The Government of Newfoundland & Labrador has supported feasibility studies for hydrogen and ammonia exports, not LNG, as part of its energy transition strategy. Newfoundland LNG exists only as a past proposal and long-term idea — no active LNG export project is moving forward today.
